Why Does Only a Few States Decide the President?
The American president is not directly elected by citizens, but by the so-called Electoral College, which assigns electors to individual candidates based on the results of elections in each state. The winner needs 270 of the 538 electoral votes.
Due to this system (which also favors less populous states over larger ones), the choice of the White House chief is ultimately most influenced by only a handful of states where the forces between Democrats and Republicans are evenly balanced.
Analysts agree that in this year’s election, it will be the seven states marked in orange on the map below. These are Nevada and Arizona in the southwestern U.S., North Carolina and Georgia in the Southeast (collectively known as the “Sun Belt”) and then Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania in the North (the “Rust Belt”).
